LE MOIS DES FEMMES 3 : UN JOUR, UNE ARTISTE
En écho au 8 mars, Journée internationale des droits des femmes, l’équipe d’Arts Plastiques mettra à l’honneur, un mois entier, la création au féminin ! Forcément partielle et partiale, une sélection d’articles, de portraits, analyses d’œuvres, de vidéos, vous sera régulièrement proposée.
L’initiative est destinée autant aux élèves d’Arts Plastiques pour renforcer et élargir leurs connaissances, qu’aux élèves soucieux d’exercer leur compréhension en langue anglaise (pour certains des articles), et à l’ensemble de la communauté éducative pour le plaisir de la (re)découverte de ces talents uniques en leur genre.

Lundi 22 mars : ELLEN GALLAGHER
Les questions d’identité raciale, de classes sociales et de genre sont au cœur de l’œuvre d’Ellen Gallagher, qui se décline en peintures, dessins, collages, et plus récemment en film installations. (…) Dans Pomp-Bang (2003), elle juxtapose des figures tirées d’images publicitaires de magazines pour femmes afro-américaines (vantant les mérites de crèmes de dépigmentation ou de produits capillaires défrisants) imposant des archétypes de beauté, qu’elle coiffe d’une perruque de plasticine jaune, et dont elle a évidé les yeux, transformant ainsi ces personnages en quête de beauté en êtres monstrueux.Article : Ellen Gallagher — AWARE Women artists / Femmes artistes

complex narratives that borrow from maritime history, science fiction, popular culture, and the experiences of African Americans. Although the work has often been interpreted as an examination of race, Gallagher also suggests a more formal reading with respect to materials, processes, and formal structures.”

In a series of watercolours she recalls these studies of natural history (“Coral 
Cities”, 2007). The people of ‘Drexciya’ represent the main inhabitants of this series. Drexciya is a mythic black Atlantis at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean founded by pregnant African women who leapt or were thrown from slave ships during the Middle Passage and gave birth to offspring capable of breathing underwater. Gallgher populates her canvases with women protected by Afro wigs made of vibrant sea creatures and marine flora; women with flowing coral hairs; and jellyfish-like figures with African faces.“
