Le Jeudi 7 mai 2026, l’amphithéâtre Michel LOUIS du Campus Universitaire de Schoelcher a été le théâtre d’un moment exceptionnel : la première édition du Concours d’Éloquence Académique des Lycées Professionnels. Et quelle édition !

Pendant quatre heures intenses, une vingtaine de lycéens ont pris la parole pour nous offrir bien plus qu’une performance oratoire : un véritable manifeste de talent, de courage et de fierté. Une matinée qui restera gravée dans les mémoires

Dès 8h30, l’amphithéâtre s’est rempli progressivement. Parents émus, professeurs fiers, camarades solidaires, officiels attentifs : 280 personnes réunies pour célébrer l’éloquence de nos jeunes des lycées professionnels. L’atmosphère était électrique, chargée d’une émotion palpable. Et ce que nous avons entendu a dépassé toutes nos espérances.

On Thursday, May 7, 2026, the Michel LOUIS Auditorium at the Schoelcher University Campus became the stage for an exceptional moment: the very first edition of the Academic Public Speaking Contest for Vocational High Schools. And what an edition it was!For four intense hours, around twenty high school students took the floor to offer us far more than an oratory performance: a true manifesto of talent, courage, and pride. A morning that will remain etched in our memories. Starting at 8:30 a.m., the auditorium gradually filled. Emotional parents, proud teachers, supportive classmates, attentive officials—280 people gathered to celebrate the eloquence of our vocational high school students. The atmosphere was electric, charged with palpable emotion. And what we heard exceeded all expectations.

Welcome to this moment which, I dare say, is far more than a competition. Welcome to a founding act. Because what we are inaugurating this morning — this first inter–vocational high school eloquence contest — was not born out of chance. It was born out of conviction. Out of determination, even. The determination of a woman who, as early as July 2024, came to my door with an idea, a spark in her eyes, and a certainty anchored deep within her: that our students had things to say, and that they deserved a stage worthy of their voices. That woman is Mrs. Bernadine Brival. And if we are gathered here today, it is because she never gave up. Because between the idea and the contest, there were months of invisible work, hours stolen from evenings and weekends, obstacles overcome with that quiet tenacity that defines her. May she be sincerely thanked — and with her, Mrs. Alain, Mrs. Lévy, Mrs. Vigon, Mrs. Coco, and all those who joined this adventure and carried it all the way to this morning. I am proud. Deeply proud.

Proud that Lycée Léopold Bissol, alongside the University of the Antilles and the Rectorate, has been at the origin of such an ambitious project. A project that places the voice at the center — the French voice, the Creole voice — as a vehicle for expression, reflection, and cultural pride. Because yes, French and Creole are not two opposing languages: they are two wings of the same flight. Two languages of culture, empowerment, and openness to the world.This contest is exactly that. It is the art of thinking out loud. It is self-confidence built word after word. It is critical thinking sharpened, creativity blossoming, arguments hitting their mark. And it is proof that vocational education does not only train skilled hands — it also shapes free minds and voices that matter. I would like to warmly acknowledge all our partners, who believed in this project and generously supported it: Amicale Zanmi Bissol, the Lions Club, Comabat, the Bourse Alizés, Madiana, Les Jeux de Sabine, La Savane des Esclaves, Watabwi, the Zenoki driving school, and the associations Eloquentia, AMBA, and Les 300 Noms. Each of you has helped make this day a reality, and we are sincerely grateful.

A very special mention goes to Mrs. Monrapha and the company Pro Services, who designed and crafted the trophies that will be awarded this morning. You created these trophies with care; the students, for their part, will have to earn them with their words. My thanks also go to the distinguished guests who honor us with their presence — your attention to what will unfold here today is, in itself, a form of recognition. And finally, thank you to the partner high schools, their principals, their teachers, and all the staff who supported their students all the way to this stage. You have done far more than pedagogical work: you have told these young people you are worth it. And now, allow me to address you directly — you, the students. You accepted to put yourselves out there. To step onto a stage. To speak before unfamiliar eyes, with your convictions, your emotions, your sensitivity. That takes courage — a courage many adults do not have. So, even before you utter a single word this morning: congratulations.And I have no doubt that your performances will surprise us. Move us. Perhaps even unsettle us a little — and that is exactly as it should be.I will end with the words of a teacher from the organizing team, words that beautifully capture the spirit of this contest:

“We offered the students a constellation of themes, not to confine their thinking, but to open it to infinity; for if their voices follow multiple paths, they all meet at the same horizon: the deep and vibrant horizon of identity.” May this contest be worthy of such a beautiful ambition. Certains ont choisi le français pour la rigueur de leur argumentation, d’autres le créole pour l’authenticité de leur témoignage, d’autres encore ont navigué entre les deux langues avec une aisance remarquable. “The Power of Words to Promote the Creole and French Languages”

On the theme “The Power of Words to Promote the Creole and French Languages,” our young speakers showcased an impressive linguistic richness. Some chose French for the precision and rigor of their argumentation, others chose Creole for the authenticity of their testimony, and still others navigated between both languages with remarkable ease.

What struck the jury and the audience? Authenticity. No rehearsed speeches, no empty rhetoric. Real stories, sincere journeys, dreams expressed without filters.

Ce qui s’est passé dans cet amphithéâtre, c’est une prise de conscience collective. Nous avons découvert – ou redécouvert – que nos lycées professionnels regorgent de talents insoupçonnés. Des jeunes capables d’argumenter, de convaincre, d’émouvoir. Des jeunes qui maîtrisent l’art de la rhétorique aussi bien que leurs gestes techniques. Entre deux prestations, les animations culturelles ont sublimé l’événement. Tout concourait à faire de cette matinée une célébration de notre identité martiniquaise.Voir leurs yeux briller en recevant leur diplôme, entendre les applaudissements nourris du public, observer l’émotion des parents : voilà ce qui fait la réussite d’un tel événement. Ce n’est pas le classement qui compte, c’est le chemin parcouru par chacun de ces jeunes.

What happened in that auditorium was a collective awakening. We discovered — or rediscovered — that our vocational high schools are full of unsuspected talent. Young people capable of arguing, convincing, and moving an audience. Young people who master the art of rhetoric just as well as their technical skills. Between the speeches, the cultural performances elevated the event even further. Everything contributed to making this morning a celebration of our Martinican identity. Seeing their eyes shine as they received their diploma, hearing the warm applause from the audience, witnessing the emotion of the parents — that is what makes an event like this truly successful. It is not the ranking that matters, but the journey each of these young people has taken.

Les compétences qui feront la différence demain

Au-delà de l’aspect compétitif, ce concours a permis à nos lycéens de développer des compétences transversales cruciales : prise de parole en public, gestion du stress, structuration de la pensée, capacité à convaincre. Des atouts qui leur serviront toute leur vie, dans leur métier comme dans leur vie citoyenne.

Un électricien qui sait présenter son devis avec clarté et conviction. Une esthéticienne capable de rassurer et de conseiller sa cliente. Un cuisinier qui défend sa vision de la gastronomie créole devant des investisseurs. Ces compétences oratoires ne sont pas accessoires : elles sont essentielles dans le monde professionnel d’aujourd’hui.

Un rendez-vous à pérenniser

Cette première édition a posé les fondations d’un événement appelé à devenir incontournable dans le paysage éducatif martiniquais. L’engouement du public, l’implication des équipes pédagogiques, le soutien des partenaires institutionnels : tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour faire de ce concours un rendez-vous annuel attendu.

Dès l’année prochaine, d’autres lycées professionnels rejoindront l’aventure. D’autres jeunes talents monteront sur scène. D’autres voix s’élèveront pour dire la force, la beauté, la richesse de nos parcours professionnels.

Changer le regard sur les lycées professionnels

Si ce concours avait une mission, ce serait celle-ci : changer le regard que porte la société sur les lycées professionnels. Montrer que l’excellence n’a pas de filière. Prouver que nos jeunes en voie professionnelle ont autant de talent, d’intelligence, de potentiel que n’importe quel autre élève.

Mission accomplie. Les spectateurs présents dans l’amphithéâtre sont repartis avec une certitude : nos lycées professionnels sont des lieux d’excellence, nos lycéens professionnels sont des talents à célébrer, et leur voix mérite d’être entendue bien au-delà des murs de leurs établissements.

Mission accomplished.

Skills That Will Make a Difference Tomorrow :Beyond the competitive aspect, this contest allowed our students to develop crucial cross‑disciplinary skills: public speaking, stress management, structured thinking, and the ability to persuade. These are assets that will serve them throughout their lives, both in their profession and as citizens. An electrician who can present a quote with clarity and conviction. A beautician capable of reassuring and advising her client. A chef defending his vision of Creole gastronomy before investors. These speaking skills are not optional — they are essential in today’s professional world.

An Event to Preserve :This first edition laid the foundations for an event destined to become a key moment in Martinique’s educational landscape. The enthusiasm of the audience, the commitment of the teaching teams, and the support of institutional partners — all the ingredients are in place to make this contest a highly anticipated annual event.As early as next year, more vocational high schools will join the adventure. More young talents will take the stage. More voices will rise to express the strength, beauty, and richness of our vocational pathways. Changing the Perception of Vocational High Schools :If this contest had one mission, it would be this: to change society’s perception of vocational high schools. To show that excellence has no single pathway. To prove that our vocational students have just as much talent, intelligence, and potential as any other student.
