SADD was created in the state of Massachusetts in 1981. At this time, the association stood for Students Against Drunk Driving and was to promote youth education and prevention through groups (the chapters) scattered in schools. In 1997, the association stood for Students Against Destructive Decisions and has kept the name since.
In 2011, they celebrated their 30th anniversary.
